On 13 April the National Commission of Foods (CONAL by its acronym in Spanish) shared a proposal for public consultation that seeks to modify the maximum limits for the content of industrially produced trans-fatty acids in foods, including those used as ingredients and raw materials.

According to the proposal the maximum content would be a general limit of 2 % of the total fat content. The current regulation foresees a maximum amount of 2% for margarines and oil for direct consumption and 5% for all other foodstuffs, including those used as ingredients and raw materials.

The proposal also seeks to ban the use of partially hydrogenated oils and fats in foods, including raw materials.

Comments will be received by 13 May 2022. It is worth mentioning that this proposal is being supported by 33 associations including medical professionals, nutritionists, etc. that have been lobbying for a change in the current rule.
