Late January, the Ministry of Health held a meeting with representatives from the food industry in Argentina to review progress and discuss drafts of the technical regulation to implement the Law on (front-of-pack) FOP labelling approved in October 2021.

It is worth remembering that according to the law schedule, the Ministry of Health should issue the technical regulation by 12 February, however it seems this regulation is expected to be published in late February/early March.

The Ministry of Health gave the food companies an overview of how the regulation to implement the Law on FOP labelling will look like , but the draft was not shared. Authorities mentioned that the schedule for the implementation of the regulation established the Law will be the same with some exceptions for those specific cases where extensions are required to the deadlines.

According to local news reports, food companies have reportedly been seeking an extension of the already established 180-day deadline to implement the rule once it is in place, while the NGOs promoting the FOP labelling implementation in Argentina asked the government to provide them the draft regulation to check if the Law spirit is being ensured.

Apparently, the drafting process of the FOP labelling rules in Argentina is going beyond the usual regulatory process, as the opinion of the food industry is not being considered, nor would the public consultation process be considered in the deadlines managed by the authorities for the publication of the final text.
