On 14 October, the Brazilian Health Regulatory Agency (ANVISA) approved the use 41 new constituents of food supplements, including melatonin.
the use of melatonin in food supplements was exclusively approved for people aged 19 years or older and with a maximum daily consumption of 0.21 mg. Claims linked to the melatonin-based food supplements consumption have not been approved. Instead, warning statements regarding the restrictions of use (group of people) of such products should be placed on their labels.
The other 40 new ingredients approved for food supplements include: eggshell membrane as a source of hyaluronic acid, glycosaminoglycans and collagen, moro orange extract (Citrus sinensis (L.)Osbeck) as a source of anthocyanins, turmeric rhizome extract as a source of curcumin, an isolated microorganism that can assist in the immune response of the elderly to the influenza vaccine and a protease enzyme that can help in the digestion of gluten.
This update is already enforce, and it complements the list of ingredients already foreseen in the current regulation for food supplements until ANVISA issues a new compiled version of the corresponding normative instruction.
It is worth mentioning that since 2018 when the current regulation on food supplements was launched, Brazil has been working in maintaining it updated not only based on the products safety but in the industry innovations too.
