The Draft CARICOM Regional Standard DCRS 06: 202X "Nutritional Labelling ? Requirements" has been opened for public consultation.
This would be applicable to the nutritional labelling of pre-packaged foods, but not for food intended for export only, food weighed or measured in or counted into the package in the presence of the purchaser, and for front-of-package (FOP) labelling, since the corresponding rules would be described within the standard on general labelling (under discussion).
The proposal is based on the Guidelines on nutrition labelling - CAC/GL 2-1985 (Amended 2017), however it would introduce additional provisions such as the declaration of trans fat, potassium and dietary fibre as mandatory.
If approved, it would be the first version of the harmonized standard at the trade bloc, since the topic is currently treated at national level.
Comments will be received until 26th November at the Trinidad & Tobago Bureau of Standards (TTBS), and until 30th November at the Barbados National Standards Institution (BNSI) in the corresponding form (just for Barbados).
