On August 22, the Ministry of Health shared for public consultation a proposal to modify current rules for food additives foreseen in the Food Sanitary Regulation. 

This way the current list of food additives will be also updated, bringing more opportunities for innovation in food technology.

Some highlights from the proposal:

• It seeks to establish a food classification (that includes food supplements) based on the one approved by CODEX. 
• The list of additives would be removed from RSA and the Technical Standard on Additives would be published. This document would establish maximum levels for food additives according to the food categories in which they are approved. 
• The list of food additives will be updated following  revisions and approvals from CODEX, nonetheless, it will require the assessment and approval by the national Advisory Committee on Food Additives. 

Companies will have till 30 November to submit comments, and after approval, 24 months to comply with the new rules.
