On 5 January, the Chamber of Deputies approved (118 votes in favour), in general, a bill (filed in 2018) that proposes to introduce changes to food labelling regarding the expiry date to make such information accessible to people with visual disabilities.

According to the proposal, "labels on food for human consumption shall contain the date of manufacturing, packaging and expiry date. This shall be clearly indicated on their packaging or labels, ensuring that the information contained therein is visible and easily understood by the population, especially by people with visual disabilities".

Although this information is already part of the mandatory information that must appear on food labels, the proposal seeks the expiry date to be highlighted by the statement "FECHA DE VENCIMIENTO", and particularly, introduce it in Braille, in addition to the printed version.

The bill also proposes technical requirements related to the appropriate font size in each case that are not currently foreseen in the Food Sanitary Regulation.

Now, the proposal will be discussed, in detailed, in the assigned commissions.
