On 2 November, it was filed at the Deputy Chamber of Chile Bill N°14679-11 to ban the use of artificial or synthetic colours in the manufacture of foodstuffs.
In summary, this proposses to include a paragraph to Article 102 from the Sanitary Code foreseen in the Federal Decree N° 725, stating tha "the use of artificial or synthetic colours as food additives is prohibited".
The Ministry of Health would have 6 months after the publication of the law to develop the corresponding technical rules to implement such provision which should be incorporate to the Food Sanitary Regulation (RSA).
According to the bill, this is based on the alleged "hypersensitivity reactions" caused by the consumption of synthetic colours, as well as the recent EU experience with the banning of titanium oxide (E-171).
The legislative initiative is still in a very initial stage, nonetheless, if approved, it would set a precedent in the region on such restriction.
