On 11th February 2024, the Codex Alimentarius released a significant update to its General Standard for the Labelling of Prepackaged Foods (CXS 1-1985), marking a milestone in food safety and consumer protection. The revised guidelines introduce critical changes to allergen labelling, including the declaration of sesame, and the expanded list of tree nuts that must now be clearly labelled on food products.
The new rules also empower each country's Health Authorities to define allergen requirements based on local risk assessments, adding a layer of complexity for food manufacturers navigating global markets. Companies will now be required to adopt new labelling formats, with allergens needing to be highlighted in a distinct typography, style, or colour on packaging. An additional "Contains" statement will also be required, listing all allergens present.
The update marks a pivotal shift towards greater transparency in food labelling and enhanced consumer protection for millions globally. Given the global influence of the Codex Alimentarius, many health authorities worldwide are tasked with aligning national standards with the new framework, ensuring that consumer safety is prioritized in food labelling and in the same way ensuring consistency with international standards
Health authorities worldwide are tasked with aligning national standards with the new framework, ensuring that consumer safety is prioritized in food packaging. The food industry must adapt quickly, balancing regulatory compliance with operational efficiency to maintain smooth supply chains and market access.
As a result, both food manufacturers and importers/exporters will face new challenges, including redesigning labels, updating packaging, and ensuring risk analysis procedures are in place, leading to potential cost increases.
