On 12 August, the National Agency for the Sanitary Regulation and Control opened for public consultation a proposal to update the current food sanitary regulation which dated from 2015.

As important highlights from the proposal, this seeks to:

- Introduce a new food sub-category for products (food and food supplements) containing hemp or non-psychoactive cannabis, with purposes of risk profiling, sanitary notification, GMP certification and sanitary control and surveillance.

- Widen the international references allowed for the use of food additives and novel ingredients.

- introduce provisions for the sanitary notification of composite foods, in combos, assorted packages, etc.

- Modify some requirements for the inscription of imported foods processed by certified GMP line.

It is worth mentioning that this is the third proposal shared by ARCSA to update the food regulation in Ecuador. The previous one was shared in early 2020 but so far, no final text has been achieved.

Additionally, on 13 August, ARCSA shared the draft technical regulation for the post-registration or post-notification quality control analysis of products for human use and consumption subject to sanitary control and surveillance. It aims to establish the procedure and considerations in the analytical services provided by accredited Conformity Assessment Bodies for post-registration or post-notification quality control of such products.

Final date for comments:

- For the updated of the sanitary regulation: 26 August 2021.

- For the post-registration/notification: 27 August 2021.
