In a videoconference, Alfonso Guati Rojo, General Director of the Standard Area at the Ministry of Economy assured that the implementation process of the modifications to NOM-051 is running successfully. These modifications introduced the new FOP labelling in Mexico.


Guati Rojo invited companies nationwide to participate in the technical webinars on food labelling imparted by the Secretariat jointly COFEPRIS and PROFECO. He also recalled that, sin May, they published a guide on the modifications of the Mexican Official Standard NOM-051-SCFI/SSA1-2010 issued in March 2020, which provides guidance on the general labelling specifications for pre-packaged food and non-alcoholic beverages, including technical specifications on the new FOP labelling scheme.

In addition, Guati Rojo mentioned that the body is working on the final text of the draft amendment of the Mexican Official Standard PROY-NOM-173-SE-2020, Juices, coconut water, nectars, non-alcoholic beverages with vegetables or fruits, coconut or coconut water, vegetables and flavoured non-alcoholic beverages, which would introduce specific requirements for these products with an impact on their labelling, for example composition requirements to fit each denomination. 


So far there are eight FOP labelling scheme approved across Latin America, ach one being different from the other in terms of shape, declaration, nutrient profiles, etc. Even requirements for general labelling or other specific topics could vary withing the region.
