
Provisions on food labelling, use of food additives and market access are been reviewed.
The Peruvian authorities are conducting a public consultation for the modification of the Regulation on the Surveillance and Sanitary Control of Food and Beverages. the draft involves a number of items of interest for foreign companies including food labelling, food additives, food packages, market access, among others. In summary, it proposes:
- It would introduce changes on the current provisions regarding the use of food additives, bringing more clarity on which food additives may be used in food products.
- The country of origin would be asked as part of the mandatory information on the label of imported foodstuffs.
- Changes on the current rules regarding the sanitary registration, including some requirements and specifications on the corresponding procedure, even for imported products.
- It would introduce a certification for food packaging with the corresponding procedure and requirements.
- It also proposes changes on the articles for the sanitary and safety quality control, introducing the Certification of the validation of the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point System (HACCP) and the Certification of Codex General Principles of Food Hygiene, setting out their corresponding procedure, requirements and validity period.
Comments should be sent to the sanitary authority before 23 September.
