On 15th November, European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) opened a public consultation on the draft scientific opinion, advising on the development of harmonised mandatory front-of-pack (FOP) nutrition labelling and the setting of nutrient profiles for restricting nutrition and health claims on foods.

This document provides scientific advice on:

  1. Nutrients and non-nutrient components of food which are of public health importance for European populations,
  2. Food groups which have important roles in diets of European populations and subgroups thereof and,
  3. The choice of nutrients and non-nutrient components of food for nutrient profiling.

Comments will be received until January 9th, 2022 and must be in English and submitted in the corresponding form application placed on the official website only.

This way, EFSA not only continues to improve nutrition labeling information but seek to reach a common approach on the rules on FOP labelling.

It is worth remembering that in the entire European region there are several voluntary FOP nutrition labelling approved. The Nutri-Score is already implemented in Belgium and France, while Germany, Netherlands, Luxemburg, Spain and Switzerland are in progress. The United Kingdom and Ireland has the colour coded FOP scheme, Italy approved the ?batteries? for energy and nutrients, and there are 6 FOP labelling schemes more in Europe (see the map below).

It only remains to wait for the EFSA discussion and how Europe looks at the Latin American experience with FOP nutrition labeling, a region where most of the countries implementing such measure have approved models based on warning messages (black and white octagons with the phrase "HIGH IN"/"EXCESS").
