On 28 February, the Ministry of Economy published the updated version of NOM-173-SE-2021, Juices, coconut water, nectars, non-alcoholic beverages with vegetable or fruit or vegetable content and pre-packaged flavoured non-alcoholic beverages-Denominations-Specifications-Commercial information and test methods.

This update aims to provide better information to consumers in relation to the so-called categories of beverages and therefore re-classifies them. In addition, it introduces new requirements for these products with an impact on their formulation and labelling, as follows:

• Nectars must contain a minimum of 25% juice, puree and/or pulp to be denominated as such.
• Flavoured beverages must inform the actual percentage of vegetable or fruit or coconut or coconut water or vegetable they contain on the main label. 
• Juices, beyond those flavourings obtained from the fruit itself (re-constitution), may not contain added sugars and food additives (other flavorings, thickeners, added sugars, colorings and sweeteners).

This update will be effective on 27 August 2022
