As of 27 October, the National Institute of Foods and Nutrition (INAN, per its Spanish acronym) from Paraguay is conducting a public consultation on requirements for modified foodstuffs regarding their lactose content.

The proposal would introduce the specific conditions for products to bear the following claims:

The proposed threshold for the claim lactose-free follows the one approved in Argentina (June 2021) and Brazil (February 2017) and the one proposed in Uruguay during the last quarter of 2020.

If approved, it would be enforced 6 months after publication. Comments will be received until 27 December.

It is worth mentioning that as a Member State of MERCOSUR, Paraguay adopted the general labeling rules from the trade bloc. However, some topics such as lactose and allergen labelling are treated at national level, which may vary a product label from one country to another.
