On 26 July 2021, the Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries issued two resolutions to establish the corresponding rules to assess imported organic products and certificate the organic production at national level. These resolutions are the following:
- Resolution N° 943/021 ?Procedure for the evaluation and management of imported organic products of vegetal origin?. In summary, for import organic products a certificate from origin showing they meet the corresponding rules on organic production must be submitted; otherwise, to be able to import them the claim ?organic? shall be removed from the label.
- Resolution N° 944/021 ?Certification of organic production?. In accordance with this resolution, those provisions foreseen in the European Community Regulation (EC) N° 834/2007 on organic production and labelling of organic products shall apply to organic production systems placed on the internal market.
To implement these resolutions the Ministry created a commission for the imported products authorization and related to the certification of the organic production, the General Directorate of Agricultural Services is the official body in charge of issuing it, as well as those entities certifying organic production systems duly registered in the online system created by said General Directorate.
Note: the logo showed in the picture is only for reference, since there is no official logo for organic products defined in Uruguay yet. Paragraph 2, Article 25 from the European Community Regulation (EC) N° 834/2007 mentioned that "national and private logos may be used in the labelling, presentation and advertising of products which satisfy the requirements...".
